This differs from the Roman and Byzantine techniques in the combined use of different materials; in addition to marble and smalti, glass pastes, metal inserts and more modern materials are used. The tesserae differ from each other and the rigidity of traditional squares makes way for more irregular elements, which however continue to follow the patterns.
